A new business called Health Cannabis has taken over a vacant storefront on Water Street in downtown St. John’s.
The minimal-looking business, with HC Inc. on its exterior, has a locked door and a sign that reads “members only,” and directs people to a website to register for membership.
Toronto Mayor John Tory won’t be sitting on his hands while the federal government irons out its plan to legalize marijuana. That process is expected to begin next spring, but Tory believes the proliferation of marijuana dispensaries must be dealt with by the city immediately and he’s urging a crackdown.
Tory has penned a letter to Tracey Cook, director of Municipal Licensing and Standards, urging immediate enforcement while the city further studies how to deal with the situation.
In the letter he also seemed to be nudging police towards action.
“… I would ask that you employ, in conjunction with the Toronto Police Service, whatever enforcement mechanism are currently available to you to address the health and safety concerns of neighbours and businesses in the communities where these marijuana dispensaries are currently operating unlawfully.”
Toronto’s licensing department is planning a crackdown on medical pot dispensaries operating without federal approval and in neighbourhoods not zoned industrial.

April 1st, 2014 brought forth an exciting change for the medicinal use and production of cannabis in Canada. The industry took a significant step forward in the commercialization of the plant thanks to a new legislation known as the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR), which authorizes Licensed Producers (LPs) to grow and distribute cannabis to approved patients. While positive, until the MMPR is fully realized, Health Canada has left many designated growers and patients operating under the old legislation, the Marijuana for Medical Access Regulations (MMAR). This is due to an injunction by the Supreme Court of Canada allowing users under MMAR to continue to grow cannabis until further action is taken.
